La croce dei Templari diventa una maglia da calcio. Succede a Rio de Janeiro, dove è il Vasco da Gama ad adottare il simbolo originariamente usato dall'Ordine dei Templari e poi passato all'Ordine di Cristo che finanziava i grandi navigatori portoghesi della fine del XV secolo (e per questo le croci finivano sulle vele delle caravelle), come Ferdinando Magellano e Vasco da Gama appunto. A scegliere la croce è stato un referendum fra la tifoseria, interrogata dal club su quale dovesse essere l'elemento caratterizzante della terza maglia. Non estraneo al grande successo di questa iniziativa è stato il fatto che il Vasco da Gama nacque come squadra proprio della folta comunità di discendenti di portoghesi residenti a Rio. L'uso di simboli cristiani non è nuovo nel calcio, e nel caso di quello europeo ha anche creato problemi 'diplomaticì: il Barcellona dovette togliere la croce dal suo stemma durante una tourneè di amichevoli nei paesi del Golfo arabo, mentre la maglia del Centenario provocò all'Inter le proteste turche nel 2007, per quella croce rossa in campo bianco simbolo di Milano ma anche dei crociati, sfoggiata in una sfida di Champions contro il Fenerbahce, squadra di Istanbul. Il problema etnico-religioso per ora non si pone al Vasco, anzi la nuova maglia sta già ottenendo un buon successo di vendite, specie quella con la 'personalizzazionè con nome e numero di Philippe Coutinho, giovane fuoriclasse che tra un anno potrebbe andare a giocare proprio nell'Inter. E per l'immediato futuro, il Vasco dovrà ristampare le nuove divise col il simbolo dello sponsor Habib's, una catena di ristoranti arabi molto apprezzati in Brasile, così che 'baffutò arabo e croce Templare facciano coppia sulla terza maglia della squadra. La dirigenza del club carioca aveva infatti rescisso il contratto ritenendo troppo bassa la cifra pagata dallo sponsor, ma la Habib's si era rivolta in tribunale, che oggi ha dato ragione al ricorrente, stabilendo che il Vasco dovrà ristampare il logo del patrocinatore, come da accordi precedenti. Intanto, secondo quanto racconta il sito 'Globoesportè, la dirigenza della squadra carioca ha anche lanciato una campagna chiamata «Vasco sulla pelle»: chi si farà tatuare sul corpo il simbolo degli antichi monaci-guerrieri custodi dei luoghi sacri riceverà in regalo dal club la nuova casacca con il n. 3. La campagna comincerà il 9 aprile alle 13 ora brasiliana, e l'obiettivo dichiarato è quello di battere il record mondiale di tatuaggi fatti in un singolo giorno, che attualmente è, Guinness dei primati alla mano, di 801.
